Apply the right amount of fertilizer to your lawn or garden. Our calculator helps you determine application rates based on your soil test.

How to use this calculator

Give your garden the right amount of nutrients without over-fertilizing. Use recommendations from a soil test for the most accurate application rate.

Lbs of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft.

What Is a Fertilizer Needs Calculator?

A Fertilizer Needs Calculator is a tool that helps you apply the correct amount of fertilizer to your lawn or garden. It ensures your plants get the nutrients they need for healthy growth without the risk of over-application, which can harm plants and the environment. This free calculator works by using the N-P-K ratio of your fertilizer and your target application rate to give you a precise amount of product to use.

How to Use This Calculator

Our free fertilizer calculator gives you an accurate application amount in four simple steps:

  1. Enter Garden/Lawn Area: Input the total square footage of the area you are fertilizing.
  2. Set Application Rate: Enter the desired application rate (e.g., pounds of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft). This is often provided by a soil test.
  3. Enter Fertilizer Ratio: Input the N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratio from your fertilizer bag.
  4. Click "Calculate": Get the total amount of your specific fertilizer product to apply over the entire area.

How It Works: Understanding the Calculation

The calculator determines the total pounds (or kg) of your specific fertilizer product needed to deliver the desired amount of actual Nitrogen over your garden area. For example, to apply 1 lb of Nitrogen using a 10-10-10 fertilizer, you need to apply 10 lbs of the product (since the product is only 10% Nitrogen by weight).

  • Amount Needed: This is the total weight of the fertilizer product you should spread over your entire calculated area.
Applying fertilizer based on a soil test is the most environmentally responsible and effective way to feed your plants, as it prevents nutrient runoff and ensures you're only adding what the soil truly needs.
